A blog about building a tool for Shape Up

March 21, 2024

The story begins

A few years ago I was introduced to Basecamps’ Shape Up by a team I was working with.

They were in the process of adopting this new method of building software products and I got to see it in action as they tried to make it work for them. At the beginning I was skeptical about it (not another methodology that tries to copy eXtreme Programming please!), but I soon realised how different this method actually is.

So I bought the book and read it from cover to cover.

Later, when I started my own Saas with a friend of mine we decided to build our product following Shape Up.

I loved the way we defined the problems we were trying to solve for our customers and how, using this method of working, it imbued us with a sense of tranquil accomplishment.

We used Basecamp to manage our product development. It worked really nicely, but I missed having a tool that would really embrace Shape Up (and not just any type of product/project work).

Fast-forward to today.

I decided to build this tool. Not only that though, I decided to blog openly about the work and progress in this space.

To be continued…
